For The Truman Show, Matte World Digital helped pioneer the development of the digital backlot. This allowed the production to photograph a partially constructed location set with complete freedom of camera movement. After original photography was finished, MWD was able to complete the partially constructed set with 3D matte painting techniques and motion tracking.

The original plate photographed on an exterrior set in Florida. Only the first story of the background buildings was constructed on the set. Wire Frame.

Final composite establishing the town.

Here again is the live action portion showing the incomplete buildings. Wire Frame.

This is the end frame of a moving camera shot establishing the town.
