Industrial Light and Magic's
commercial division designed a fantastic steel environment for
it's client, Pontiac, and asked Matte World Digital to collaborate
on the shots. ILM generated 3D animation for the foregrounds,
and MWD provided digital matte paintings of the landscape. For
the final shot of the car alone on the highest summit, MWD generated
a complete 3D matte painting:
The car was shot on location. The yellow targets on the ground help track the
camera movement.
The camera movement recovered from the original photography is applied to the 3D environment,
to give the impression of a camera drifting past the mountaintop. Animated saw blades and cloud
movement help give life to the digital environment.
